| | | Does anybody like William Tucci's SHI? I think the story and art are interesting. In my opinion, nothing can top any of Joe's work, but Shi is really cool, too.
Born of a Japanese father and American mother, 10 year-old, Ana Ishikawa witnesses the brutal slaying of her entire family. The child is consequently spirited away and raised by her grandfather, Yoshitora, a descendent of the Sohei, the great warrior monks of medieval Kyoto.
Shrouded in secrecy, Yoshitora trains Ana in the ways of the Sohei - her sole mission in life is to seek out her family's murderer and avenge her family's honor. Never forgetting the Catholic teachings of her mother, however, Ana's life becomes one of constant inner conflict between her programmed mission of revenge and the Christian leanings she secretly harbors.
With her conflicted soul weakened, this vengeful obsession consumes Ana's very being, as she transforms herself to Shi - the living embodiment of Death, who since childhood, has terrified and encouraged her in her crusade of vengeance.
And yet the duality that rages Ana's soul will not permit her submission to the death demon that terrorizes her. For Ana's faith and the ethereal visions of her gallant ancestral Sohei shepherd her along the bloody Way of the Warrior.

| | | Yeah, I collect some Shi comics. The story is pretty interesting, I am waiting for the new series to come out. I hope I am not disappointed, I kind of have mixed reviews of Bill Tucci's stuff. His stuff can have this real nice line weight to it, real graphic looking, nice and clean. BUT, then you get to some of his other stuff, and I am like, Huh?
I met Bill Tucci 2 and a half years ago at the San Diego Comic-con convention, you know the big one. I went to meet him and get a sketch of Shi. Well, I met him and he told me he was backed up with drawings and such ( it was later in the day) and to come back early tomorrow morning to do a sketch for me (keep in mind, I was paying the man.) No problem, I thought, I'll come back tommorrow.
WELL. Let me tell you, I came back the next day bright and early, not too early because I didn't want to come across as over eager. When I arrived at his table, the con had already been going on for over an hour, and he was not at his table yet. The ladies he had helping him behind the table said he would be here soon. Ok, cool.
To make a long story short, I waited a good hour and a half for him to arrive and got no apology whatsoever. Was I mad? HELL YEAH! I can understand shit happens, but when you tell someone to come and you are not even there to do business, and THEN even don't offer any apology....well maybe I am asking for too much, but I was annoyed.
I guess what made up for it, was while I was waiting, I had other fans waiting for him telling me some amusing stories of Bill Tucci and Tia Carrie. (The girl from Wayne's World) Apparentely the year before she came to guest with Bill Tucci( or to appear on her own for the show, I am not sure....), to promote the comic I guess, and fans wanted to meet her, blah, blah etc. Mr. Tucci suppossedly was hogging her all to himself, and wouldn't let anyone near her. Ha, don't know how true it is, but I found it amusing. Oh and he is always late. Which I can vouch for, because other appearances he was suppossed to make that I went to, he pulled the same crap. Was never at his table.
Okay, I'm done ranting:) You must believe in yourself before others will believe in you...

Hesse, First off, let me truly apologize for not doing that sketch for you. Comic Con is such a crazy show and I'm always behind and it seems always in meetings too. I wish I had told you what time I'd be there instead of just "tomorrow morning" but again, I am a cartoonist and not the brightest crayon in the box. Anyhow, I'm really, really sorry and am sure I didn't know that you were waiting. My wife and sister-in-law who run the booth didn't tell me either. That show is just crazy and even though I stay at my booth all day long (unless I have meetings) I still get behind and manage to bother someone. So if you can find it in your heart to forgive me, I'd gladly do you a sketch at a future show.
As for the whole Tia Carrere thing, she was signing at our booth and I wasn't hogging her at all! Honest. She signed for like three hours at our booth before being moved to the autograph area for some breathing room and order. That was our first movie deal and a major disaster.
Anyhow, again, I want to apologize, promise the new book will not dissapoint (unbreakable) and thank you floatingmonk for the kind words too .
Some of you might be wondering why another creator is on Joe's site. Well, I LOVE Joe's art and pros are fans too!
Great site, great art and GREAT LINSNER!

I think you are more than welcome here on the Linsner.com message board Mr. Tucci (who was at his booth all day in Pittsburgh if I recall correctly)
Having worked on the other side of the table with Joe and the gang, I can honestly say that I am stunned creators get as much sketching and requests done as they do!
I know Joe always feels bad when he has to turn someone away or tells them to come back the next day and still doesn't have time to get everything done. This is even after he's taken work back with him to his room at the end of the day.
It would be great if creators knew how many fans were going to show up or how many sketch requests they are going to get, but sadly, that never happens at a show. Things are just too unpredictable.
I tell ya, I've seen how draining these shows can be. Imagine shaking hands with dozens of people, talking, signing books and trying to sketch all at once? It can be quite overwhelming and I'm not even Joe!
As I have told Joe many times, I'm glad I'm a "nobody", as I don't think I could deal with "fans"! LOL...
(though I know Joe loves his fans )
And yeah, that's bad coming from me, as I'm one of them "fans" myself!

"Shi" literally means "death" in Japanese.
Mini Factoid: Since the number 4 is also pronounced "shi" in Japanese, it is considered unlucky or insulting to give someone a total of 4 items of anything like presents, food or money.

Wow, I did not realize how my post came off after re-reading it. I sounded like a bitter fan! In no way shape or form am I bitter. The last thing I wanted to do was create negativity on this particular post. And in no way did I want to discourage the fans to stop reading SHI. It is a great story! To be completely honest, I had a long day at work and I was probably tired and irritated already. (Not to make an excuse) And I probably was taking some pent-up frustration out on the boards.
What I didn't say was that even after I waited, you did graciously do a wonderful large sketch of Shi for me. (Which is still hanging on my wall..) And the two ladies, your wife and mother-in-law, now I think about it, were apologetic. As for Tia Carrere story, I believe you, there usually is two sides to every story. I just thought it was amusing how some fans mispercieve things and make them larger than what they are.
Actually in turn, I want to apologize how I came off because in no way do I want to give fans the wrong impression of you. And I really appreciate your honesty and apology in return. I am looking foward to your new Shi series!
So the lesson here today kiddies? Don't post messages half asleep :) and make sure you re-reåd them before posting them! I know I will.
P.S. How do you make the reply in blue text? I am clueless to this feature. [EDIT (Greg): Use the QUOTE button after logging in, instead of the REPLY button and it'll include the text from the message you're replying to.]

I remember there being this big segment on a Vegas special I watched about how a lot of the hotels were trying to cater to the Japanese clientel by eliminating the 4th floor, making sure tables were set for 3 or 5, etc, stuff like that, based on the whole 4/death/unlucky thing. Kinda interesting.
And wow, Bill Tucci is a fanboy! How cool is that?
http://www.geocities.com/crowsaxton I learn something new about myself every day. Why do you think I have this perpetually horrified look on my face?

Just further proof that his crayon is actually pretty sharp when it comes to good taste in illustrated women. "Certamen inter mammosas tunicis madefactis vestitas!" - Lucifer "Tu tibi futuendave es." - Dawn "Diabolus me coegit peccare!" - Lucifer "Tete fututure, te saluto." - Dawn

| | | Billy's not a fanboy..very funny y'all. He's a fellow creator & peer with whom the Linser team is happy to be good pals. shii has been around for many years.
& he has a mighty hot wife too! & a cute lil' baby!
How does one guy do it all like that?
Ya know, I forget what show it was..hmm..Chicago? Is that the one with the rotating restaurant at the top? But Joe & I bumped into Billy after Billy had a few drinks & it wasn't long before we joined him. If you wanna get very..very..drunk, sit down with Mr. Tucci when you see a bottle or two of wine opened on his dinner table..
Then again, that was before he acquired aformentioned cute wife. :) Tends to alter a guy's drinking habits.
I so agree w/ you, Cyn, I'm baffled when creators even manage to keep smiling all day, given all the wild requests that come their way.
"Could you sign this item? Okay, it's a bootleg, but why get mad?"
"Could you sign EIGHT of this Lady Death comic book? Oh yeah, & this one DAWN comic. Why do I have 8 Lady Death's? I dunno..she's cool."
"Could you please sign my entire card set?"
"Hey, when are you gonna make a DAWN movie? I think you should get my girlfriend to play her."
Now, mind you, 90% of the people who walk up are fine folks who have their stuff all ready to be signed & such. But yes, every now & then, Cyndee & I will glance over at Joe & some form of the above comments, & he's a pro - still signing & smiling - but she & I know the guy behind the grin.. (I will not emoticon here! Fight the emoticon trend! You lazy people can just picture me winking.)
Anyhows, Mr. Tucci is a simillarly class act. He saw me struggling with a heavy cooler at the Pittsburgh con & took it from me. Walked it all the way out to my van. Wotta guy.
& that's one thing I *really* love about comics! It's a small enough industry that those sorts of bumping-into folks happens all the time. How excellent to have positive things to say.
Hey Billy! My best to your lovely family.

| | | I think everyone in the industry is a fan boy when it comes to Joe's work!
This is a great site and will be checking in from time to time. I've just been neglecting my own forum boards and getting some of our members wondering aloud just where I am!
When I first learned how one pronounces "death" in Japanese, my character was renamed from "Ran" (chaos, rebellion). The story then kinda all fell into place with the shi kanji inscribed coin being left on the fallen bodies of her brother and father.
Interesting thing about the kanji for "Shi" meaning death and all things bad. This weekend, my father-in-law (wearing a "Shi" t-shirt) did some Japanese take out and when he did, the folks at the place started yelling at him for bringing death into their business!

It is completely fascinating how every topic seems to lead back to you being a marine.
There's no emoticon for 'boggle', but you get the idea.
That is so wild. On the one hand, I was about to say something that could have come off snooty, like, 'I can't *imagine* some single facet of my identity permeating my whole being in that way!' But then I realized I feel the same way about being an artist..that comes before every other thing in my life, sometimes to the exclusion of much else.
I suppose I am forced to grudgingly concede that artists & mariens have something in common, after all. Crazy, stubborn, pigheaded passion & all the weird discipline that accompanies same.
Food for thought..which *also* has nothing to do with Shi, the original thread, but oh well. Such is conversation in cyberspace.
