Just wondering what others thoughts on the plot for this movie are. JJ Abrams has really kept this hush hush. I'm really hoping it's not going to be a big disapointment. And please, don't let it be a Voltron flic. YUK.

It looks like a Godzilla type movie filmed from a 'man in the street' point of view. Cinema Verite. Which is a neat idea, if they can do it right. Why the hell not? They've done every other kind of big monster movie.

I do have to say that the title is prety fucking lame. It sounds like a 'Harrison Ford solves a mystery' kind of title. "From the people who brought you Witness -- Cloverfield"

Geting too clever with a title can sometimes sink a ship. The audience needs to have a jumping on point.

Not to be anal but please lay off the caps. It almost hurts to read.
I've been having wet dreams about this being a Godzilla flick but I know its not going to be. I am excited though and am forming a group of friends to go to the midnight showing in Chicago.
It shall be a very good night. Even if it sucks I'm sure the camp will make it fun.

Hey everyone,
I'm not sure how many of us are from Chicago but for any who are there is a free screening of Cloverfield at the Kerasotes Webster Place on Wed the 16th.

It's a facebook event so if your on facebook check it out or if not I can print out a copy for you. You use the print out as your ticket.

The screening starts at 7pm but its first come first served so the earlier the better. I'm planning on getting there either at 4pm or earlier. Gonna have myself a picnic while waiting.

I really wanted to dislike the movie but I didn't. The Shakey-cam didn't give me as much of a headache as the Bourne movies and I ended up getting depressed because of the movie but over all I thought it was great.

I'm not sure if it will translate onto DVD very well though. I don't see it as the kind of movie I'd just pop in and watch when bored. It seems like something you'd have to see on the big screen and only see once or twice.

Are there any pictures of the monster online anywhere? I am too swamped with work to get to the theatre, but I am really curious to see what the damned thing looks like. Yeah, i know it will ruin the surprise, but i wanna see!

Joe, alot of the leaked footage people posted has been taken down, but here's one I was able to find. It's more or less just a head shot, but you get a general idea until you see the movie.

It's close.

Hasbro has announced they're making a figure of the monster but have yet to post a picture of it. The fact that it's not being released until late in the year means they're probably withholding it purposely until the movie dies down a bit. This should be the ideal model for what it looks like.

Yeah, it's pretty steep, but look at all the things you get:

Cloverfield Monster Features:

70 points of articulation and incredible life-like detail
Authentic sound
14” tall
10 parasites
Two interchangeable heads
Statue of Liberty head accessory
Special Cloverfield collector’s edition packaging

I guess if I can pay $40 for a talking Golem figure, I can justify speanding $99 on this. LOL

For it to have been any less campy, it would have had to star Charlton Heston. Aside from the acting and the "plot," it was a decent film.

It depends on what you consider the plot. The monster wasn't the plot, it was the setting.

The plot was Rob and Beth. Their romance is the entire point of the film. The whole setup was to get these two characters together at the end of the film and tell each other "I love you." That's why the audience knows nothing about the monster and knows nothing about whether the monster was stopped. The monster is not important it's just a plot device to bring those two characters together.

I heard a rumor that sequels will come out with the same event, just viewed from different people in other parts of the city. That way you get different aspects of the attack and new faces to get chomped! Sounds interesting, eh? Twisted

I also heard that close attention must be paid to the alternating Coney Island scenes because events occur in the background that give hints to the creature's origin. These scenes are in the same recorder being used to film the attack.

It entertained me. The acting was horrible. It's amazing how calm people in that kind of situation can be. Also, how stupid.

Hey guys, my brother just died and I'm gonna go find some stupid chick who I'm not even dating and fucked once. Wanna come? We just have to run under the giant fucking monster attacking the city and climb onto a crumbling building. Sounds awesome, hey?

Oh yes, don't forget to watch the Coney Island scene. Cause that solved everything Eye Roll
I'm glad they made the people so stupid, it made it more hilarious when they died. Mr. Green

Ooh - the "plot" thickens! Presumably you'd find out more with each sequel, if the rumour is true. I wonder if there will be anymore eye-roll-inducing 9/11 references. "Maybe the government is behind this!" Regardless of whether audience members believe 9/11 was an inside job, the ploddingly blatant metaphor was patronising.

I think maybe realism was the goal here, not to win any Oscars. Like a Blair Witch deal but here you can see what's killing everybody. Do you think you would act rationally if something like that was roaming your neighborhood chomping everyone in sight? Not!
I have to give these producers credit for trying something totally different. It helps too if you like monster & sci-fi stuff to begin with.

Oh man, I hear ya. Good thing they put that coney island scene in there to clear up all nonsense.
The more I think about that movie, the more I hate it. I wouldn't act rationally if a big monster was eating my city, no. But that's why these people didn't make any sense. They didn't care that the brother died, didn't care that there was a monster about 10 feet away from them, and didn't care to LEAVE.
It's a great special effects movie though. Chris had a good idea to have a movie from the military view - that's the only other movie I'd probably go see.

I think that the whole point was that you do irrational things when you do it for love. Rob going after Beth was all he could think about. If you were in his shoes and knew a loved one needed your help, you'd do it too. It's a human reaction. I was a bit distrurbed by how layed back he was telling his mother that his brother died, but again, his focus had then turned to Beth.

I loved the movie, but you can't please everyone. Hopefully the new Indy flick will put this out of your mind. :D

I agree with you. At its heart, pardon the unintended pun, the movie is really a love story. Sure the main feature is the monster, but the whole theme involves being with your loved one, which is all Beth and Rob wanted to do. Someone said earlier in a post that it was just some chick he had slept with, I guess they weren't hearing when it was mentioned they had been best friends for some time.

No, I heard it. I can put myself in their shoes, for sure. But me and my boyfriend have been together for 3 years. We were friends first as well. I just think their love was a bit premature for Rob to go gallivanting off to the rescue (when he wasn't even certain she was alive).

You're right - you can't please everyone! I hated it from the beginning, when they wouldn't show what the monster was in the previews. But I heard good things, and being the naive person I am, trusted them. If it wasn't a love story, I would have digged it that much more.

And YES. The new Indy movie is a big thing in my mind! May is much too far...

I didn't think the movie was that bad. It was kinda cool to get the "man on the street" perspective of a monster attack. For once you DON'T have the omniscient viewpoint, and the hero of the story isn't the "Rebel Scientist" or "lone wolf ex-military cop" or something. The main characters are just... regular people. And a) regular people are stupid, and b) most folks don't want to leave loved ones behind in a disaster, especially if they've just lost other ones (please note examples of folks running back into burning buildings or just not leaving them while trying to save their dog, cat, kid, etc) and c) most young folks have the "immortality complex". Even after watching people all around them bite the big one (or get bitten by the Big One), they still think "but it won't happen to me".

That said, I didn't give a rat's ass about the characters in the movie. They weren't the kind of people I'd hang out with, they seemed kinda shallow and poorly acted and the only one I was bummed out about seeing die was Hud, the "comic relief".

Of course, I wasn't aware of all the pre-movie hype, either. I didn't know much about it, was just taken to the midnight premier with some friends from the comic shop.
